Two brothers and a female relative were stabbed with knives and beaten with baseball bats early Tuesday morning during a burglary of their Woodland Hills apartment, police said.
Det. Bob Howe of Los Angeles Police Department’s West Valley Division said three masked burglars broke a window about 2:15 a.m. and entered the Topanga Canyon Boulevard apartment where John Powell, 20, and Charles Powell, 18, were sleeping. The burglars beat the men with bats, Howe said.
When Debra Powell, a relative, awoke, the intruders struck her too and then stabbed each of the three tenants, police said.
The victims were taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where a spokeswoman said John Powell underwent emergency surgery and was listed in critical condition Tuesday afternoon. Charles was listed in stable condition, and Debra had been released.
“It is believed that there is a connection between one of the victims and one or more of the suspects,” Howe said.
No arrests had been made by Tuesday afternoon.
