Sir Robert Sainsbury; Helped Develop Grocery Chain

Sir Robert Sainsbury, 93, who helped develop his family’s supermarket chain in Britain. Sainsbury joined Sainsbury Markets in 1930 and rose rapidly through the ranks of what is now the second-largest supermarket chain in Britain with nearly 400 stores. He was named chairman in 1967 and co-president two years later. A patron of the arts, he founded the Sainsbury Center for Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia near Norwich, 100 miles northeast of London. In 1978, Sainsbury donated his entire art collection to the center. He was knighted in 1967 for his services to the arts. On Sunday in London.
