VALLEY / VENTURA COUNTY SPORTS : ROUNDUP : Burroughs Sinks Santa Monica, 12-8

Burroughs High took a big step toward moving up from No. 6 in the Southern Section Division III coaches poll Wednesday by defeating second-ranked Santa Monica, 12-8, in a nonleague boys’ water polo match at Santa Monica.
Jason Falitz and Kenny Livas each scored four goals for the Indians (10-2). Bart Bagdasaryan contributed nine saves.
Justin Frank had one goal, one assist and six steals for Burroughs.
Harvard-Westlake 9, El Dorado 5--Brian Ault, Mike Gross and Eric Townsend each scored two goals for the Wolverines at El Dorado.
The Wolverines (7-1) dropped from second to fifth in the Southern Section Division I coaches poll this week.
MEN’S WATER POLO
Ventura 11, Chaffey 4--Sophomore Ryan Fisher had two goals and four steals for the Pirates in a Western State Conference opener at Ventura.
Serghei Vaculeac, Trevor Dasnoit and Ryan Apperson each added two goals for the Pirates (6-5). Holt Harper had two assists.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
San Marcos 10, Westlake 8--Kelly Schmandt, the No. 17-ranked player in Southern California in the U.S. Tennis Assn. girls’ 18 division, surrendered one game in sweeping three sets for San Marcos (4-0). It was Westlake’s first loss in a nonleague match at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village.
Westlake (3-1) got two victories apiece from the No. 2 doubles team of Lauren Baer and Lindsay Weiss and the third team of Jessica Blau and Lauren Townsend.
Buena 11, Camarillo 7--Yasmin Fisher swept at No. 1 singles for the Bulldogs (3-0) at Buena.
Fisher, ranked 27th in Southern California in the girls’ 18 division by the USTA, lost only two games, to Lauren Gaona, who is ranked 52nd in the girls’ 16 division.
Camarillo is 1-4.
Canyon 18, Littlerock 0--Dorian Miller and Alanna Gadd swept their sets at No. 1 doubles for the Cowboys (4-2) at Canyon.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Monroe def. Grant, 15-1, 15-3, 14-16, 16-14--Leslie Berastain served 10 of her 11 aces for the Vikings in the second game of a nonleague victory at Monroe.
Berastain added seven kills for the Vikings (2-0).
Mary Lim had 13 kills and Jenny Wang had nine kills for Monroe.
Alemany def. Burroughs, 15-12, 15-11, 15-4--Czarina Rinon had nine kills in 15 attempts with one error for a .533 hitting percentage for Alemany (3-0) at Burroughs.
Taft def. Kennedy, 15-7, 15-9, 15-11--Trisha Bratford had 11 kills and five aces for the Toreadors (2-0) at Kennedy.
BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY
Pacific View League--Freshman Phillip Reid of Rio Mesa won with a time of 16:49 on a three-mile course at Mission Oaks Park.
Shad Hopkins was second in 17:04 for team champion Camarillo.
Channel League--Josh Spiker became the second runner to break 15 minutes for three miles at Dos Pueblos, clocking 14:59 to help Ventura win the team title, 34-37 over Buena.
GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY
Pacific View League--Three Camarillo runners placed among the top four, helping the Scorpions win at Mission Oaks Park.
Nicole Richardson won with a time of 20:23 over three miles. Marianne Gerry was third in 21:15 and Michelle Meyer finished fourth in 21:20.
Channel League--Ventura placed six runners in the top 10 to run away from Buena for the team title.
Cathy Dunne of Buena won in 19:31.
