Actor and retired Air Force Col. John C. Fahringer died Monday at St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo. He was 81.
Fahringer was born Sept. 18, 1918, in Chicago and attended school in Pennsylvania, eventually graduating from Bucknell University.
In 1942, he joined the Air Force and became a P-47 pilot who fought against Germany. Fahringer received many medals and honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and three battle stars.
After 30 years in military service, he retired and began a second career as an actor. He was a member of the Screen Actors Guild and AFTRA. He performed on stage and in small parts for television.
In 1979, Fahringer married Edythe Sills. The following year, he graduated from USC with a master’s degree in law. They lived in Oxnard for six years and Camarillo for 14 years.
His wife said that he loved playing tennis and was a wonderful player. She also said he was an excellent golfer.
In addition to his wife, Fahringer is survived by stepsons John Sills of Encino, Steven Sills of Reseda and Mickey Sills of Santa Monica; sister Mona Davies of Cambria; brothers Richard Fahringer of Germany and Frederick Fahringer of Texas, and nine grandchildren.
Services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pierce Bros. Griffin Mortuary Chapel in Camarillo, with the Rev. Lee Truman officiating. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
