GOP Rejects Clinton Social Security Plan

WASHINGTON — With a fresh volley of criticism, GOP congressional leaders dismissed Social Security legislation that President Clinton sent to Capitol Hill on Tuesday.
“This is not a realistic proposal,” said Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.). “I’ve heard this proposal described as the Godzilla of all shell games.”
In the House, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Bill Archer (R-Texas) said: “This plan won’t save Social Security.”
The proposal would earmark for baby boomers’ retirement benefits any government savings--potentially billions in interest--from using Social Security surpluses to pay off the national debt early.
