Five Key Moments

The first Oregon State drive showed everything about what kind of game it would be for the UCLA defense. The Beavers, starting at their own 20, had big plays, with two gains of at least 20 yards and another of 10. The Beavers also had critical plays, ending up in third down three times and converting all three opportunities.

UCLA had just scored. Oregon State still led, 21-7, but the Bruins had some momentum for the first time. Robert Prescott quickly ended that, though, with a 50-yard kickoff return. The Beavers quickly turned that into another 21-point cushion when tailback Antonio Battle went the next 50 yards on the first play from scrimmage.

The Bruins scored! The Bruins scored! It wasn’t always such a major achievement, or even noteworthy. But when Gabe Crecion caught a four-yard pass from Cory Paus with 5:54 left in the second quarter, it was the first time they nudged the scoreboard since Chris Griffith’s field goal with 53 seconds left in the fourth quarter Oct. 2 at Arizona State. It was the first touchdown since just before halftime in Tempe.

With 5:40 remaining in the third quarter, Paus was intercepted by cornerback Ricky Walker. When the Bruins came out for their next possession, Scott McEwan was at quarterback, and Paus was on the sideline the rest of the way.
