Garner, Calvary Chapel Pass Opening Test

Luke Garner passed for a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to spark Calvary Chapel to a 38-0 victory over Whittier Christian in an Olympic League football opener Saturday at La Habra High School.

Garner, who completed six of 12 passes for 109 yards, combined with running back Blake West on a 65-yard touchdown play, then passed 10 yards to Mike Kobzeff for another score as the Eagles pulled away from a 10-0 halftime lead.

West scored Calvary Chapel’s first touchdown on a two-yard run in the second quarter, and Garner kicked a 37-yard field goal later in the period.

Brian Cripe led Calvary Chapel (2-4, 1-0) in rushing with 125 yards on only four carries. His last carry of the evening was a 65-yard run up the middle for a fourth-quarter touchdown that gave the Eagles a 30-0 lead.

Whittier Christian’s offense sputtered in the second half, as the Heralds gained only 29 yards.

Leading Whittier Christian (0-6, 0-1) were running back David Jones with 29 yards rushing in 19 carries and quarterback Abraham Santos, who completed five of 20 passes for 43 yards.
