Diet-Drug Settlement in Question, Lawyers Say

Thousands suing American Home Products Corp. for injuries they allege they suffered while taking the now-banned diet drugs Redux or Pondimin will not participate in a proposed $3.75-billion settlement, lawyers say. American Home has the right to walk away from the deal if it finds that too many people who took the drug decide to opt out. It did not say how many people that would be. Lawyers representing more than 8,000 plaintiffs say the settlement terms are inadequate. American Home said it had been sued by 11,000 plaintiffs, but others dispute that figure.
