Katella’s Danley Resigns as Boys’ Basketball Coach

Tom Danley, boys’ basketball coach at Katella High since the school opened in 1966, resigned his position Thursday night after his team’s awards banquet.
Danley, 62, had hinted at the decision for months. He said this season his job as athletic director for the Anaheim Union High School District was taking more of his time and he didn’t feel he could put the time into coaching that he wanted to.
“It’s not the end,” Danley said Thursday. “It’s the beginning of going in a new direction.”
He said he would concentrate on rebuilding the after-school sports programs at the district’s 15 middle schools. He also intends to remain involved with the district’s high school basketball tournament, which he started last season at the Anaheim Convention Center.
In 33 seasons, Danley’s teams compiled a record of 618-242. This season, he directed the Knights (21-7) to a second-place finish in the Empire League and into the second round of the Southern Section Division I-A playoffs.
A retirement banquet in his honor at the Anaheim Convention Center will be held May 19.
