Preis Selected to Play for U.S. Soccer Team

Michael Preis of Cal State Northridge has been chosen to the U.S. 23-and-under national soccer team.

Preis, a junior forward from Chatsworth High, was selected second-team Division I All-Independent after scoring 14 goals with eight assists last season.

Preis’ debut for the U.S. team will take place April 7 against Brazil in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Erin Misaki, a senior midfielder for Hart High, has been selected Southern Section Division II girls’ offensive player of the year.

Misaki, who will attend Portland, had 24 goals and 22 assists to help the Indians claim a share of the Division II title.

Others selected to the All-Southern Section Division II team were Becca Gould and Ali Pavoni of Hart, Natalie Sanderson of Buena and Tasha Spangler of Westlake.

Naomi Chu and Katie Peck of Westlake, Sarah Costello of Ventura, Cindy Mallett of Simi Valley and J.J. Toohey of Buena were selected to the second team.

Jennifer Valentine, a senior midfielder at Chaminade High, has been selected Southern Section Division IV girls’ offensive player of the year.

Valentine scored 19 goals to help the Eagles earn a share of the Division IV championship. Mike Evans of Chaminade was named division coach of the year.

Others on the All-Southern Section Division IV team are Kelly Lavery and Amy Watts of Chaminade, goalkeeper Lauren Arase of La Canada, Rebecca Carroll of Oak Park, Sara Deckers and Imani Dorsey of Harvard-Westlake, and Margo Horner and Alicia Mac of Paraclete.

Second-team selections include Nadine Apelian and Lauren Jordan of Harvard-Westlake, Morgan Conver and Sara Leibowitz of Chaminade and Amanda Pollock and Kristin Velotta of Paraclete.

Carroll, a forward for the Eagles, signed a letter of intent with Colorado College.

Carroll had 104 goals and 62 assists in her career for the Eagles.

BASKETBALL

Two all-star girls’ games will be played tonight at Fairfax High and will feature the top seniors from the City Section.

Seniors whose teams participated in the Division playoffs will play in the 7 p.m. game. Players from City Championship playoff teams will face off at 8:30 p.m.

Erica Yazzie of Antelope Valley has been selected one of four recipients of the achievement award presented by the California Community College Academic Advisors Assn.

Yazzie, a second-team All-Foothill Conference selection, hit 68 three-point shots, second-best on the school’s single-season list.

FOOTBALL

Back 2 Basics, a team from the region, will play for a berth in the NFL Air-It-Out national final this weekend in Orlando, Fla.

The flag football title game is scheduled for Saturday.

The team includes Christopher and Danny Suarez of Burbank, Tim Riley of Van Nuys, Angel Martinez of Castaic and Todd Smith of Pacoima.

A weekly free kicking clinic for players 12 and older will be held on Wednesdays at Mission Viejo High from 4-6 p.m.

Jim Power, West Coast director for the National Kicking Service, is running the clinic. Players must register to attend.

Ratcliffe Stadium at Fresno City College has been selected to host the Blue Diamond California Community College state championship game on Dec. 11.
