Azze Leads Fountain Valley Past Long Beach Wilson

Justin Azze drove in two runs with a two-out triple in the bottom of the seventh to help Fountain Valley defeat Long Beach Wilson, 4-3, in the semifinals of the Loara baseball tournament Thursday at Glover Stadium.

The triple allowed Will Hudson, who singled, and Wayne Ritchie, who walked, to score. Long Beach Wilson scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead, but the Barons rallied with one run in bottom of the sixth and two in the seventh.

Hudson went one for two with two stolen bases and starter Azze pitched five innings and allowed one run and struck out six.

Fountain Valley (4-0) plays Dana Hills in the championship game Saturday night at 7 at Glover Stadium.

In the Costa Mesa Tournament:

Edison 4, Riverside North 2--Senior Scot Maas homered on the first pitch for Edison (2-2). Junior right-hander Glen Hedgepeth earned his second win for the Chargers. Senior Dale Thayer picked up the save.

San Clemente 1, Norwalk 0--Ben Straley singled home the winning run for San Clemente (1-3) in the eighth. Steve Schroer pitched seven innings and gave up four hits and no walks with eight strikeouts in the consolation game.

In the Glendora tournament:

Fullerton 4, Covina Charter Oaks 3--Fullerton’s Daniel Matson struck out the final two batters with the bases loaded in the seventh.

In the Newport Elks Tournament:

Esperanza 8, Capistrano Valley 7--Scott Hendrickson (three RBIs) hit the game-winning double with two outs in the sixth for host Esperanza (3-0), which plays the Mater Dei-La Habra winner in the finals.

In nonleague golf:

Aliso Niguel 208, Capistrano Valley 210--Medalist Neal Emery shot a one-over 36 for Capistrano Valley (2-4). Mike Kendall shot 39 to lead Aliso Niguel (3-1) at El Niguel.

Brea Olinda 373, Sunny Hills 382--Brad Sader was medalist for Brea (2-1) with a one-under 69 at Western Hills and Los Coyotes. He shot a 32 at Los Coyotes.

Kennedy 221, Magnolia 274--Freshman Peter Whang shot a 37 to lead Kennedy (1-0). The victory was the first for the Kennedy golf team in 15 years.

University 379, Temecula Linfield 431--Brian Sinay ended the day with a four-under 68 at Redhawk.

In nonleague softball:

Anaheim 8, Bolsa Grande 0--Anaheim pitcher Jessica Lampton (three for four) struck out 14 and walked one in the no-hitter.

Estancia 3, Santiago 0--Joanna Danner struck out 18 and walked three in a no-hitter and hit a two-run homer in the sixth for Estancia (2-1).

University 3, Santa Ana Valley 2 (9)--Tiffany Waldman pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts for University.

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Dana Hills 114, Huntington Beach 66--Sophomore Scott Baer won the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke for Dana Hills (1-1). Baer also swam on the winning 400 free relay and anchored the winning 200 free relay for the Dolphins.

In nonleague boys’ track and field

Villa Park 73, Saddleback 53--Justin Haney earned first place in the triple jump with a mark of 43-7 for Villa Park. Thomas Talavous threw 140-6 in the discus for Saddleback.

In nonleague girls’ track and field:

Santa Margarita 85, Fountain Valley 58--Christie Vonder Ahe tied her 1998 school record in the pole vault at 9-6 for Santa Margarita (1-0).
