BEIJING — Under pressure from police, Chinese dissidents canceled a meeting on human rights scheduled to coincide with a visit to Beijing by Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, activists said Sunday.
The proposed national gathering in Wuhan was called off because its organizers were being detained or prevented from attending, said Zha Jianguo, a member of the banned China Democracy Party in Beijing.
Albright kicked off talks with Chinese leaders today by saying Washington “deplored” Beijing’s crackdown on democracy activists.
