The Irvine Unified School District Board of Education will vote tonight on whether to charge students for parking, a move intended to raise money to limit off-campus travel. If passed, students who drive to school would be required to pay $90 each year for parking. The fees would raise about $100,000 of the $172,000 needed to monitor student drivers.

The move toward tightening campus supervision started in March, after a Woodbridge High School student died in a car accident while driving off campus during lunch. A task force of students, parents, teachers, administrators, police and city officials drafted a safety plan that allows only seniors to drive off campus during lunch.

Under the plan, parking lots would have to be set aside for seniors, a move estimated to cost $11,000. The district would also have to hire supervisors and custodians to cope with more students eating lunch on campus.
