The Park Is Always There, We Just Don’t Always See It

Mary Mc Namara’s “In the Company of Men” (Jan. 24) struck a chord with me. I also live near a park and drive by with “windows up, air conditioning on,” rushing to someplace or other. In passing, I’ve always admired the park--its stillness and beauty. Over the past several years, however, the scene has changed. Now there’s activity: pinatas hanging from the trees and children at play.
But the park hasn’t changed; I have. It has been 30-plus years since I’ve played there, romping with my dog and climbing liquidambar trees with childhood friends. It’s the same welcoming place it has always been. Only as grown-ups do we look upon it as a lovely objet d’art, not to be touched, as if it were something in a curio cabinet.
