Montana rode the one-two scoring punch of Linda Cummings and Linda Weyler to upset Cal State Northridge, 77-71, in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Missoula, Mont.
Cummings, a forward, scored 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting and Weyler, the Grizzlies’ center, had 26 points, making nine of 12 free throws. Cummings and Weyler were the only Montana players to score in double figures.
Montana (9-13, 5-7 in the Big Sky) made 30 of 45 free throws, compared to 17 of 22 for Northridge (14-7, 8-3).
Montana outrebounded the Matadors, 41-33.
Edniesha Curry scored 22 points for Northridge on eight-of-19 shooting, including two of six from three-point range.
Neda Milic had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Keisha Harris added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Matadors.
Montana took a 35-30 lead at halftime.
BASEBALL
Valley 10, L.A. City 8--Sigi Arroyo’s two-run double in the eighth inning broke a 7-7 tie for the Monarchs (2-3) in a Western State Conference tournament game at Valley.
Arroyo had two hits and two runs batted in. Sal Trujillo (1-0) was the winning pitcher in relief, allowing one unearned run, one hit and no walks in two innings.
Moorpark 4, Harbor 3--Jeremy Holiday, a transfer from the University of San Francisco, pitched a seven-hitter and the Raiders won a WSC tournament game at Moorpark.
Holiday (1-1), from Antelope Valley High, had four strikeouts for Moorpark (3-2).
Pierce 11, East L.A. 3--Traviss Hodge had three hits, including a two-run double in the first inning, and the Brahmas (1-1) beat East L.A. (0-5) in the WSC tournament at Pierce.
Cerritos 4, Canyons 3--Joe Bunton scored the winning run on a wild pitch with two out in the ninth for the Falcons (5-0) in the WSC tournament at Canyons.
Mike Preski gave up five hits, with six strikeouts and no walks in 5 2/3 innings for Canyons (1-4).
Cerro Coso 11, Ventura 3--Mario Robledo had two hits, including a solo home run, but the Pirates (1-1) lost to Cerro Coso (3-1) in the Sequoias tournament.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Valley 78, Pierce 64--Maricela Rodriguez scored 24 points for Valley (17-13, 4-5) in a Western State Conference South Division game at Pierce.
