Re “State’s Citrus Growers Ask U.S. Caution on Imports,” Feb. 8:
Nick Anderson wrote a clear story on Argentine fruit coming into the U.S. We growers can compete. The U.S. and California in particular do not want some of the pests and diseases in Argentine fruit. These pests, known as “exotic” pests, like the brown tree snake and killer bees, are a local as well as a national problem. Let good peer-reviewed science prevail. If their products are grown as ours are, under the strictest pesticide laws in the world, free of pests and diseases, we have no concerns.
