Fish Quotas

* Re “Quotas to Slash Take of Some Fish Species,” Dec. 7: The complaints from California fisherman in response to reduced quotas of fish catches are remarkably shortsighted. The overfishing of the past has resulted in reductions of as much as 95% of commercial fish populations off our coast. The truth is that we cannot continue the practices of the past and expect to have any kind of sustainable fisheries in the future, unless dramatic actions are taken now.
I applaud the decision-makers of the National Marine Fisheries Service for making a politically unpopular but critically important decision.
