OSH, Kyrgyzstan — Government air raids killed three civilians Monday during an effort to dislodge gunmen who have been holding more than a dozen hostages in a remote mountainous area of Kyrgyzstan, news reports said.
The planes were trying to hit a rebel base but hit civilian homes instead, a Kyrgyz defense official said. The warplanes belong to Uzbekistan, which is helping its Central Asian neighbor fight militants who have occupied five villages since last week.
