EDGARTOWN, Mass. — President Clinton celebrated his 53rd birthday Thursday by sharing a few inside jokes with White House staff and then leaving Washington for more than two weeks of vacationing and politicking.
He promised reporters traveling with him to Martha’s Vineyard: “I’ll try not to work you too hard.”
Later, presidential friend Vernon E. Jordan Jr. met Clinton’s plane on the island off Massachusetts. As in past years, Jordan planned a small birthday celebration for Clinton at Jordan’s vacation home.
About 200 members of the White House staff and volunteers threw Clinton a much larger birthday party earlier Thursday.
On Aug. 28, the Clintons leave the island for East Hampton, N.Y., and a Democratic National Committee fund-raising weekend.
