A daylong commemoration of the life and work of farm worker rights leader Cesar Chavez--including a Mass, march, speeches, music, food and children’s activities--is scheduled today in Oxnard.
The day will begin with a Mass from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 500 N. Juanita Road, in La Colonia. Immediately following will be a march, starting at the church and ending at Plaza Park, between 4th and 5th streets.
The march will include a stop at Cesar Chavez School and Chavez’s boyhood home in La Colonia. When the march ends at the park about 11 a.m., Chavez’s son, Paul, is scheduled to speak to the crowd, launching a three-hour program.
Entertainment will include a performance by the Los Angeles theater group Inlakech Cultural Center and a local Aztec dancing group. The first-place winner of the Cesar Chavez speech contest will also be announced.
Activity tables for children will be set up and vendors will sell books, art and United Farm Worker merchandise. Event organizers include the Cesar Chavez Commemoration Committee, city of Oxnard, El Concilio del Condado de Ventura and United Farm Workers.
