Huntington Beach Seeking Input on Reorganizing City Arts Center
- Share via
Plans to reorganize the deficit-plagued Huntington Beach Arts Center were postponed Monday night for at least a month by the City Council while the city polls local arts groups and donors for their opinions.
The 4-year-old center, which specializes in avant-garde works, is $306,000 in the red because of higher-than-expected construction costs and lower-than-expected attendance.
The city’s community services department has recommended reducing the center’s hours, eliminating its director, printing no more exhibition catalogs and trimming its $350,000 budget by $70,000.
A proposal to switch to more “traditional” exhibits was rejected by city staff.
