Ventura Falls in Title Game of Water Polo Tournament

Ryan Fisher scored three goals and David Radka added two for Ventura College, but the Pirates fell to Citrus, 12-6, in the championship of the Ventura water polo tournament Saturday.

Citrus (3-0-1) is ranked third in the state coaches’ poll, and Ventura (3-1) is fourth.

Tim Rhodes scored Ventura’s other goal. The Pirates converted three times in the final quarter, but were unable to make up a 6-2 halftime deficit. They trailed, 9-3, going into the third quarter.

Rhodes scored three times and Radka twice as Ventura advanced to the title game by beating Mt. San Antonio College, 5-4, in a semifinal game.

Ventura goalie Kyle Fisher made 11 saves against Citrus and 12 against Mt. SAC.

In the consolation final:

Valley 13, Rio Hondo 7--Brian Ellis scored four goals and Loran Leidinger added three to lead the Monarchs.

Goalie Matt Pennington had eight saves for Valley (2-2). Rio Hondo is 1-3.

Valley advanced with a 21-8 consolation semifinal victory over Hartnell. Leidinger had six goals and goalie Andrew Langer made seven saves.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Valley 12, Mt. San Antonio 7--Stephanie Hammer had eight goals and Melissa Minkey made eight saves for the unranked Monarchs (2-2) in the final pool-play game of the Cypress tournament.

The Mounties are ranked 11th in the state.

Earlier, Valley defeated Cerritos, 14-2, after dropping games Friday to seventh-ranked Palomar and 10th-ranked Sierra.

MEN’S SOCCER

The Master’s 2, Fresno Pacific 1--Anthon Brueggeman scored twice, including the game-winner in the 65th minute, in a nonconference game at Fresno Pacific.

Fresno Pacific, ranked No. 15 in the NAIA, took a 1-0 lead in the first minute on a goal by Jacob Carter. Brueggeman answered with his first goal on a header off a corner kick one minute later.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Holy Name d. The Master’s, 10-15, 15-11, 15-12, 15-13--All-tournament selection Beth Barrington had 11 kills for the Mustangs (6-6) in pool play of the Fresno Pacific tournament.
