School Officials to Hold Forum on Education

State Education Supt. Delaine Eastin and top officials from the Los Angeles Unified School District will speak Sunday in Bel-Air at a public education forum sponsored by the Jewish Federation.
The forum will include a series of panel discussions to bring attention to the issues facing parents, students and educators in public school systems, said Michael Hirschfeld, executive director of the federation’s Jewish Community Relations Committee.
Topics will include “Reorganization for Better Education,” “Choices in Public Education,” “Life After Elementary School” and “Preparing for the 21st Century.”
Panel members will be Eastin; L.A. Unified Supt. Ruben Zacarias; Assistant Supt. Ted Alexander; Stuart Bernstein, L.A. Unified Hamilton-Palisades-University cluster administrator; Judy Ivie Burton, assistant superintendent for school reform/LEARN implementation; Principal Yvonne Chan of Vaughn Street School; Guilbert Hentschke, dean of the USC School of Education; Principal Joan Orshoff Marks of Carpenter Avenue School; Joe Rao, administrative coordinator for L.A. Unified charter and school-based management; Principal Sylvia Rousseau of Santa Monica High School; Special Education Commission Director Sheila Simon; and Steven Soboroff, senior advisor to the office of Mayor Richard Riordan.
The meeting will be from 8:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Roscomare Road Elementary School, 2425 Roscomare Road.
