December Storm Cleanup Costing City $225,000

The December storm will cost Newport Beach $225,000, so the City Council amended the budget this week to pay for the cleanup.
Most of that money paid for hauling tons of garbage, trees and leaves out of Newport Harbor and from city beaches after the Dec. 6 storm, then depositing the debris at the dump.
During storms, large amounts of debris typically flow down San Diego Creek and wind up in the bay and harbor.
City officials estimated that they removed more than 200 tons of debris from city waterways in the days that followed the deluge. Because a state of emergency was declared for Orange County, the city may be reimbursed for 75% of its cleanup costs.
Officials said it is unlikely that these state funds would arrive before the end of the current fiscal year.
