A 57-year-old man jailed on suspicion of a 1985 slaying in Santa Ana died early Tuesday of cardiac arrest, officials said.
The inmate, whose name was withheld pending notification of his family, was booked into the jail on Jan. 16 after his arrest in Mexico earlier this month.
The inmate told deputies at the main jail in Santa Ana at 12:28 a.m. that he was having difficulty breathing.
The inmate went into cardiac arrest as soon as he arrived at the jail medical ward; staff members began emergency techniques until paramedics arrived, Lt. Hector Rivera said.
The man was rushed to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana and was pronounced dead at 1:14 a.m., he said.
