Residents Warned of Scheme That Solicits Police Funds

Police warned residents Tuesday of phone solicitors who falsely claim to be raising money to benefit officers.
Lt. Ray Scheu said he had received several reports since Monday from residents who had gotten calls asking for donations to the Culver City Police Officers Assn.
Scheu said that organization only solicits once a year for a benefit dance.
He said the callers were male and “official sounding” and were vague when questioned about the specifics of their donation drive. Callers said they would come to residents’ homes to pick up donations and declined to give a mailing address.
Scheu did not know whether any residents had donated to the phony solicitors.
“Somebody’s out there trying to bleed some money off of them,” Scheu said.
