A 32-year-old Anaheim woman remained in critical condition Monday, a day after she and six other people were struck by an 82-year-old driver who veered into a crowd of fellow churchgoers.
Maria Pacheco Garcia was being treated at UCI Medical Center in Orange for injuries she suffered when a 1988 Chevrolet Caprice hopped a curb and plowed into a Palm Sunday crowd near the driveway of St. Anthony’s Church. The six other victims suffered moderate to minor injuries.
The driver, Maria Pickering, was questioned by police at the scene and may face charges, according to Anaheim Police Sgt. Joe Vargas. Pickering, who was leaving the Sunday service, apparently hit the accelerator and lost control as she tried to turn from the driveway onto La Palma Avenue, police said.
