A German transient wounded by Long Beach police officers after he allegedly robbed a restaurant was listed in good condition on Monday, officials said.
David Benko, 19, robbed a Denny’s Restaurant in the 600 block of Long Beach Boulevard on Sunday, holding a handgun to the manager’s head before running out the door with some cash, said Long Beach Police Officer Maria Lopez.
A few blocks away, Benko was spotted by a police helicopter. Officers told Benko to put his gun down, but instead he pointed it at officers, Lopez said. He was struck twice in the chest. Paramedics transported him to St. Mary’s Medical Center, officials said.
Benko was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and armed robbery, Lopez said. Bail has been set at $200,000.
