Gentel Gooden’s colorful drawing of a family of strawberries en route to the California Strawberry Festival was enough for the Oxnard fifth-grader to win the event’s youth T-shirt design contest.
The 10-year-old Christa McAuliffe School pupil beat 635 entries submitted by elementary school students in three school districts to win the competition, festival officials announced last week.
Gentel’s design will grace the front of youth T-shirts sold at the 15th annual festival, which runs May 16-17 at Oxnard’s College Park.
“When we were asked to draw a picture about the Strawberry Festival, I thought about my family and how it would be fun to draw a picture showing all of us on the way to the festival,” Gentel said.
