Man Stabbed, Friend Held After Argument

A drunken argument between friends over the weekend left one man in the hospital Monday recovering from stab wounds and the other in jail.
Gabriel Ceja, 27, was in stable condition at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard with stab wounds to his arm and liver, Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Bill Montijo said.
While Ceja was lying in a hospital bed, his friend, 34-year-old Jose Vargas Hernandez, was being held at the Ventura County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, Montijo said.
The two men had been drinking together most of Sunday at a home in the 2000 block of Balboa Street in El Rio when they started to fight about 4:30 p.m., Montijo said. Investigators say Hernandez stabbed Ceja, who was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery.
