The Wat Thai Temple will host its annual Songkran Festival next weekend to celebrate the Thai traditional New Year.
The two-day festival, featuring religious activities, entertainment, a beauty contest and numerous Thai food and merchandise booths, will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the temple, 8225 Coldwater Canyon Ave.
The traditional Thai New Year of Songkran is observed by offering food to the monks, listening to sermons and bathing the statue of Buddha.
Observers also mark the day by asking parents, grandparents and elderly relatives for their blessings and forgiveness.
The monks will conduct a memorial service Saturday morning. Later in the day there will be musical performances by students of the Wat Thai school and an international cultural show.
In a religious ceremony Sunday, fragrant water will be poured over the palms of monks and elders. Other activities include a Thai folk song contest and a classical dance performance.
Parking will be available at Kaiser Permanente Hospital on Cantara Street, with shuttle van service from the hospital to the temple. For more information, call (818) 780-4200.
