FYI, Anne Beatts: Hmong on Top of News

I am writing to address Anne Beatts’ column “Speak Out Against California, Go to Jail” (March 8). Her opening sentence, “As anyone whose first language isn’t Hmong knows by now, Oprah bested the beef barons,” is offensive to the Hmong people. She is implying that the Hmong people are ignorant. I am Hmong and my first language is Hmong, but I am hardly ignorant of current affairs.
I am a law student and my goal is to improve my life and my community. There are many Hmong who are doing the same.
