MPAA Exec to Join Sony

Barbara Dixon, who has been a top executive on Capitol Hill for nearly 14 years for the Motion Picture Assn. of America and its chief, Jack Valenti, has joined Sony Pictures Entertainment as senior vice president of publicity of the Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group.
Dixon, who will join the company May 1 after relocating to Los Angeles, will handle corporate communications and public relations for the studio and its senior management team.
As vice president of the MPAA, Dixon oversaw press relations and lobbied on behalf of the entertainment industry before Congress, federal agencies and the public. She served as a liaison to the industry’s guilds and as an advocate for Hollywood’s major studios.
A native of Pasadena, Dixon has worked in Washington since receiving a graduate degree in political science from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. “I moved . . . for graduate school and never left,” Dixon said.
Dixon was hired by Valenti after her tenure as deputy press secretary to vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro in 1984.
