Five mourners were killed and eight wounded when gunmen opened fire on a funeral procession for an opposition figure who took several U.N. personnel hostage in February and later released them. A police spokesman in Tbilisi, the capital, said there was no indication as to the identity or number of the attackers, who strafed the procession in the western town of Zugdidi with automatic weapons and also threw a grenade. Television footage showed dozens of people scattering on a tree-lined avenue, screaming and shouting. The assault began as the procession of about 1,000 people was about to enter a cemetery for the burial of rebel Gocha Esebua, whom police killed Tuesday.
