Fishing for Memories

The June 29 story (“Cascades and Quiet”) about Stehekin-- that tiny village at the head of Lake Chelan in Washington state--brought back happy memories of our wartime vacations there.
Travel was restricted, and money was scarce at that time of our lives. The bus trip to Chelan, the steamer ride on the lake and a small resort at Lucerne fit into our tiny budget. But instead of Lucerne, we wound up at Stehekin, where the food at Beryl Imus’ lunchroom was extra special, and the fishing was amazing.
The Golden West Lodge’s owner, Peter Miller, was away at war, and the lodge was officially closed. But Peter’s wife, Bette, just happened to be up taking care of the place and made us welcome “just for company.” Thanks for the memories of a special retreat.
