Brea Olinda Defense Shuts Down Buena Park

BREA — Brea Olinda’s defense scored one touchdown and stopped a Buena Park drive on the Wildcat three-yard line in a 17-0 victory over the Coyotes Friday night.

The defensive line of Fred Thomas, Ben Howington, Jamar Chism and Nate Criner held heralded running back Brian McDonald to 95 yards in 22 carries, including a 43-yard run to end the first half. McDonald accounted to 1,477 yards and 21 touchdowns for Buena Park last season.

A bad handoff from quarterback Tony Alonzo to McDonald gave the Wildcats their first touchdown. After Brea’s opening drive faltered when Felipe Hermosillo recovered a Coyote fumble on the Buena Park 11, the Coyotes were hit with a pair of penalties. On first and 19 from the two, the handoff was muffed with Rasuli Webster falling on the ball in the end zone for the touchdown. Scott Davis added the extra point to give Brea Olinda a 7-0 lead.

With La Mirada transfer Travis Blood directing the second Buena Park drive, the Wildcats drove 86 yards on six plays to increase their lead to 14-0. Scott Lieng’s 61-yard run highlighted the drive, which culminated on a seven-yard touchdown run by Tommy Pierce.

A 34-yard field goal by Davis with 19 seconds left in the half increased the lead to 17-0.

Geno Rose, who punched the ball out of the hands of Buena Park receiver Eric Wolford and recovered a fumble to stop a third-quarter drive, intercepted a pass on the 4 in the fourth quarter to preserve the shutout.

Brea Olinda, playing without Long Beach Poly transfer Deonta Birdsong, who is expected to be eligible Monday, started Michael Perrance at quarterback. He directed the team 68 yards on the first drive.
