Report: Ex-UTEP Player Focus of IRS Probe
- Share via
An Internal Revenue Service investigation into alleged links between past and current Texas El Paso football players and a tax-fraud scheme centers on former player Brian Burks, the El Paso Herald-Post reported.
Burks, a transfer from L.A. Southwest College, was a defensive lineman for UTEP in 1994 and 1995. He no longer is eligible to play football, but is still taking classes at UTEP.
ESPN News reported that a “ringleader” took a 60% cut after arranging for players to receive illegally inflated tax-refund checks. The ringleader was said to have an inside contact with the IRS in Burks’ home state of California.
Tax fraud is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $100,000 fine.
