ST. LOUIS — Mark McGwire stayed stuck at 50 homers, going 0 for 4 Friday night as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres, 4-2.
McGwire, who on Wednesday became the first player since Babe Ruth to hit 50 homers in consecutive seasons, struck out twice, grounded out and flied out.
After the game, he said questions about his home-run chase were “foolish.”
“If the media is going to sit back and critique that stuff and take away from the ballgame, that’s wrong, OK?” McGwire said.
Matt Morris gave up only one run despite getting hit hard, and Ray Lankford homered to lead St. Louis. Royce Clayton drove in two runs for the Cardinals, who are 23-17 against the NL West and 45-61 against other teams.
Morris (10-8), who is tied for second in victories among rookies, gave up 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings, struck out five and walked one.
Dennis Eckersley, the Cardinals’ fourth pitcher, got three outs for his 35th save.
