Is There No Language for Technogeeks?
I know I’m a technogeek (and proud of it).
But . . . in the Life & Style section of the Sunday Times, the “Psych 101” column (Nov. 16), the author complains about “technobabble--RAM, ROM, bit, byte” and in the very next breath complains about “the bastardization of perfectly good words such as ‘mouse,’ ‘boot’ and ‘virus.’ ”
Let me make sure I understand this. If we coin new words to describe precisely parts of the computer, that’s “technobabble.” If we reuse old words, that’s “bastardization.”
Please tell me how we are to talk about the world of technology if we can use neither old nor new words.
