The European Commission is expected to formally approve today the merger of Boeing Co. and McDonnell Douglas Corp. . . . Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Republic Industries Inc. said second-quarter earnings more than doubled to $69.5 million, or 17 cents a share, from $30 million, or 9 cents, a year earlier. . . . Pharmacia & Upjohn Inc. said second-quarter profit before one-time items dropped to $178 million, or 34 cents a share, from $269 million, or 51 cents, a year earlier. . . .
