Ex-Sen. Sanford Gets More Cancer Tests

Former North Carolina governor and U.S. Sen. Terry Sanford entered Duke University Medical Center for more tests after being diagnosed with inoperable cancer of the esophagus and liver. The prognosis appeared grim for the 80-year-old Democrat. A Duke physician said Sanford’s cancer is incurable. Sanford plans to drop many of his civic responsibilities, including teaching a class at Duke. Sanford served as governor from 1961 to ’65 and later spent 16 years as president of Duke before serving one term in the U.S. Senate in 1986.
