Panorama City Man Killed in Hit-and-Run

A Panorama City man was killed on the Harbor Freeway when an intoxicated motorist struck the man and then fled the scene, said California Highway Patrol spokesman John Tye.
Police said the victim might have been examining a disabled 1984 Pontiac Fiero stopped on a southbound lane when he was struck Tuesday night by a 1997 Ford sports utility vehicle driven by Charles Norman. The victim’s name was not released Wednesday pending family notification of his death.
“We’re doing a check on the car,” said Tye, of the CHP’s South Los Angeles division. “We have reason to believe it was disabled.”
The Ford struck the victim, 30, and then the Pontiac at 11:10 p.m. on the freeway just north of El Segundo, said Ken Ford, a CHP spokesman.
Norman, 59, fled the scene “extremely intoxicated” after the collision and police later arrested him at home in Compton, Tye said.
Norman was held on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony hit and run and felony DUI, said CHP Officer Karen Faciani.
Officials pronounced the victim dead at the scene. Norman suffered minor injuries, including a head abrasion, Tye said.
