It’s All or Nothing in Next Superintendent Vote

The board members of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District believe it is all right to disagree, except when it comes to hiring a new superintendent.
“It makes it more difficult if the board doesn’t agree on the person,” said board member Martha Fluor.
When Newport-Mesa hired its last superintendent, Mac Bernd, it did so on a split vote. Fluor said Bernd had to work twice as hard to convince those board members who didn’t vote for him that he was doing a good job.
Bernd left the district last week. He has been replaced on an interim basis by former Assistant Supt. Robert Francy. Early next year, the board will assemble a committee to conduct a nationwide search. They hope to select someone--unanimously--by June.
