Manufacturing Permit Denied to Vitamin Firm

Prompted by years of noise and odor complaints from residents, the Planning Commission has denied a vitamin company’s request for a manufacturing permit.

The commission, in a 3 to 1 vote, imposed a two-year time limit to halt manufacturing activities at Westar Nutrition Inc. Commissioner Charles Robertson was absent; Tom Sutro voted no.

“The use really was not appropriate adjacent to the residential properties,” said Perry Valantine, the city’s planning manager.

Westar officials requested an application to appeal the decision.

Planners will next seek approval from the City Council to change the zoning of the Victoria Street company site from manufacturing to commercial.

In 1991, Westar Nutrition, Inc. received permission to repackage and distribute vitamins, but expanded its operations to include manufacturing.

In August, the City Council reversed an earlier decision by the commission that allowed the company to continue its manufacturing operations.
