Child-Care Academy Proposal Questioned
A proposed academy that would prepare students for careers in child care hit a delay recently as school trustees debated the value of such a program.
The academy, proposed for San Clemente High School, would be one of 12 in the Capistrano Unified School District designed to prepare students for specific careers, including business, health and performing arts. The programs are geared toward about 8% of district students who want a head start on their careers, but are not considering going to college.
In the debate last week, Trustee Sheila J. Benecke and other board members warned that most child care industry jobs carry low wages. They also cautioned the district against precluding courses that develop math and science skills.
A refined version of the academy proposal will be presented Jan. 12.
