This Week’s Tournaments

A listing of prep basketball tournaments that include county teams:

BOYS’

National Sports Grill Tournament

* Site: Loara, Servite and La Quinta high schools

* Dates: Bracketed games, Dec. 1-5; Championship, Dec. 6 at 8:15 p.m.

* County schools entered: El Modena, Santa Margarita, Valencia, Loara, Fullerton, Villa Park, Servite, Sunny Hills, El Dorado, Irvine, Woodbridge, La Quinta, Foothill

* 1996 champion: Villa Park, a 66-36 winner over Santa Margarita

* Outlook: This 16-team field, led by Santa Margarita, Villa Park and Woodbridge, is one of the strongest in the county. Cypress is no longer one of the host schools.

Elks Coyote Classic

* Site: Buena Park HS

* Dates: Pool play games, Dec. 1-4; Championship, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m.

* County schools entered: Saddleback, Kennedy, Rancho Alamitos, Buena Park, Magnolia, Garden Grove

* 1996 champion: Downey, a 60-47 winner over Santa Fe Springs Santa Fe

* Outlook: Buena Park Coach Ed Matillo points to Magnolia as the early favorite. The Sentinels open pool play against the defending champions on Tuesday.

Daily Pilot Tip-Off Classic

* Site: Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar and Edison

* Dates: Pool play games, Dec. 1-5; Championship, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m.

* County schools entered: Troy, Sonora, Estancia, Newport Harbor, Edison, Pacifica, Cypress, Aliso Niguel, Capistrano Valley, Corona del Mar

* 1996 champion: Los Alamitos, a 64-53 winner over West Torrance

* Outlook: Long Beach Poly, which figures to be one of the top teams in the state, will take on a host of traditionally strong county teams.

Diablo Inferno

* Site: Mission Viejo and Laguna Hills

* Dates: Pool play games, Dec. 1-5; Champion determined by quarters won

* County schools entered: Mission Viejo, El Toro, Laguna Hills

* 1996 champion: El Toro, a 73-49 winner over Tustin

* Outlook: This five-team competition will match three South County squads against Oceanside and Alhambra Keppel.

Bolsa Grande Tournament

* Site: Bolsa Grande

* Dates: Pool play games, Dec. 1-4; Championship, Dec. 5 at 8 p.m.

* County schools entered: Katella, Savanna, Marina, Whittier Christian, Santa Ana, Bolsa Grande, Laguna Beach

* 1996 champion: Marina, a 60-39 winner over Laguna Beach

* Outlook: Marina and Katella are expected to battle for the first tournament title of the high school basketball season.

Brea Olinda Backyard Bash

* Site: Brea Olinda

* Dates: Pool-play games, Dec. 2-6; Champion determined by points

* County schools entered: Calvary Chapel, Esperanza, La Habra, Brea Olinda

* 1996 champion: No championship game

* Outlook: With only five teams, this is one of the smaller tournaments, but it should have some competitive matchups between the four county teams and the fifth team, which is from Canada.

Brethren Christian, Dec. 1-6 (Brethren Christian); Los Angeles Loyola, Dec. 2-6 (Trabuco Hills); San Luis Obispo, Dec. 4-6 (Mater Dei, San Clemente).

GIRLS’

Woodbridge Tip-Off Classic

* Site: Woodbridge

* Dates: Pool play games, Dec. 1-5; Championship, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

* County schools entered: Mater Dei, Woodbridge, Fountain Valley, Esperanza, San Clemente.

* 1996 champion: Woodbridge, a 47-44 winner over Laguna Hills

* Outlook: This eight-team tournament is small in size, but doesn’t lack talent: all five county schools have traditionally strong teams. San Clemente-Esperanza showdown is Friday.

Century Tournament

* Site: Century HS

* Dates: Pool play games, Dec. 3-5; Championship, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.

* County schools entered: Century, El Toro, Santa Ana Valley, Orange, Sunny Hills, Troy, Sonora, Capistrano Valley Christian

* 1996 champion: El Toro, a 59-46 winner over Century

* Outlook: This all-Orange County field should provide good competition, with El Toro, Century and Troy each capable of winning it.

Irvine Tournament

* Site: Irvine HS

* Dates: Bracketed games, Dec. 3 and 5; Championship, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

* County schools entered: Foothill, Tustin, Aliso Niguel, Irvine, Orange Lutheran, Pacifica

* 1996 champion: Pacifica, a 51-47 winner over Irvine

* Outlook: This tournament is wide open, though Cerritos Gahr typically has the strength to win the title.

Fullerton Tip-Off Classic

* Site: Fullerton HS

* Dates: Pool play games, Dec. 2-5; Championship, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

* County schools entered: Fullerton, Saddleback, Kennedy, Garden Grove, Bolsa Grande, Magnolia, Valencia, Loara, Santiago, Western, Rosary, Santa Ana

* 1996 champion: Rosary, a 48-46 winner over Loara

* Outlook: This 13th annual tournament features several competitive matchups. Rosary has the most talent, but Loara, Whittier La Serna and Western are close behind.

South Coast Holiday Classic

* Site: University HS

* Dates: Bracketed games, Dec. 6, 8, 9, 12; Championship, Dec. 13 at 8 p.m.

* County schools entered: Santa Margarita, El Modena, Newport Harbor, Capistrano Valley, Ocean View, University, Trabuco Hills, Villa Park, La Quinta

* 1996 champion: San Bernardino defeated Vista

* Outlook: This 16-team tournament presents a possible second-round matchup between Ocean View and Capistrano Valley.
