Vanderbilt Edges Titans in Men’s Soccer Opener

Tony Kuhn headed in two second-half goals to lead Vanderbilt to a 3-2 victory over Cal State Fullerton in the Reebok men’s soccer invitational Friday at Titan Field.
Kuhn’s first goal broke a 1-1 tie in the 63rd minute and a 2-2 tie in the 84th. Kuhn put in the game-winner from about 15 yards after a pass from B.J. Smith. Travis Weeks scored Vanderbilt’s other goal.
Titan Charlie Lynch scored the game’s first goal in the 21st minute. Sheldon Thomas tied the score in the 71st minute. The game was the season opener for both teams.
The tournament continues Sunday with Vanderbilt playing UCLA at 5 p.m., and Fullerton meeting Santa Clara at 7:30 p.m. at Titan Field.
In nonconference men’s soccer:
UC Irvine 2, San Diego State 2 (2 OT)--Mike Mucino scored first for UC Irvine in the 22nd minute mark on an assist from Shaun Callahan. Raja Hawa, who scored both goals for San Diego State, tied the score nine minutes later. Mike Margeson gave the Anteaters a 2-1 lead in the second half, but Hawa tied the score in the 76th minute. Aaron Linder had six saves for UC Irvine.
In nonconference women’s soccer:
UC San Diego 5, Southern California College 1--UC San Diego scored four goals in the second half to break a 1-1 tie. Lauren Johnson had two unassisted goals to lead UC San Diego (1-0). Jamie Gardiner scored for SCC (0-1).
In the Southern Mississippi women’s volleyball holiday classic:
Cal State Fullerton 3, Southern Mississippi 0--LaCretia Smith had 12 kills and teammate Allison Anderson had 10 to help lead the Titans to a 15-7, 15-12, 15-12 season-opening victory. Anderson had 35 assists and Smith and Katie Crawford each had 31.
