Deion Sanders’ thoughts have turned from baseball to football.
The cornerback/outfielder showed up at the Dallas Cowboys’ complex again Wednesday to learn the playbook for Sunday’s regular-season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Three Rivers Stadium. Sanders’ baseball team, the Cincinnati Reds, was in Colorado to play the Rockies.

One day into his new job with the San Francisco 49ers, pass-rush specialist Kevin Greene registered an unlikely sack: Dana Stubblefield.
Greene took part in his first practice with the 49ers, who installed him as a starting left end in their nickel and dime defensive packages. In those alignments, end Roy Barker will slide inside and Stubblefield, a two-time Pro Bowl selection at defensive tackle, goes to the sidelines.
In other news, Garrison Hearst will start at halfback after beating out incumbent Terry Kirby.

St. Louis Ram running back Lawrence Phillips, limited to two carries in the final exhibition game by a sore left knee, was cleared to play in the season opener. . . . The NFL Players Assn. has filed a grievance accusing the Arizona Cardinals of benching former quarterback Boomer Esiason last season to avoid $350,000 in performance incentives, according to the Arizona Republic.
