2 Men Held After Off-Duty Deputy’s Truck Is Rammed

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Two Pacoima men were arrested after ramming a truck driven by an off-duty sheriff’s deputy and throwing beer bottles at it, authorities said.

Felix Duran, 20, and Marcos Dorantes, 22, were taken into custody Wednesday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon, throwing objects at a moving vehicle and hit-and-run. They were being held on $50,000 bail each at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Station in Santa Clarita, said Lt. Larry Gump.

Deputy Charles Moylan was driving south on San Fernando Road near Pine Street in Newhall about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday when his pickup was hit from behind. Two men in a late model truck sped off, authorities said.

As Moylan caught up to them, the men threw beer bottles at his pickup. The deputy drove alongside, turned on his interior light and displayed his badge, Gump said.

The truck sped up, then stopped. As Moylan pulled up next to it, the men threw more beer bottles, shattering the rear window of Moylan’s truck. The truck’s driver then rammed Moylan’s pickup twice and sped off, Gump said.

Moylan followed the men onto the southbound Antelope Valley Freeway and found them inspecting their car on the freeway shoulder. As Moylan approached, they fled on foot.

Authorities impounded the truck and deputies arrested Duran and Dorantes about 1 p.m. Wednesday after they showed up at the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station looking for it. Los Angeles Police Department officers went to Duran’s house the night before and Duran told them his truck had been stolen, Gump said.

Moylan identified the two men, Gump said.
