SANTA CLARITA — One teenager was killed and another was seriously injured in a single-car crash on the Golden State Freeway late Saturday night, officials said.
Jose Hernandez, 18, of Sylmar died shortly after midnight in the accident just south of the Antelope Valley Freeway in Santa Clarita, according to officials with the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Authorities said Hernandez was driving a Toyota Tercel north on the Golden State at about 85 mph when he lost control of the vehicle and struck an embankment on the right side of the road. The car went airborne, landed on its roof and rolled, they said.
Hernandez died at the scene and the passenger, identified only as a 16-year-old boy, was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. His condition was unavailable.
Both youths were wearing safety belts, officials said.
